Parenting a Child with Special Needs

Discovering that your child has a disability can be an over-whelming experience. The feelings that parents describe upon finding out their child has a disability can include shock, denial, grief, guilt, anger and confusion, the type of emotions parents experience, as intense and overwhelming as they may be, are also normal and acceptable. There are a number of ways tat parents have helped themselves and those they love adjust to living with and caring for a child with special needs.

Parenting children with special needs presents a variety of challenges. The goal of group therapy for parents, facilitated by professional counselors, is to open discussions regarding specific concerns parents may have with their child's progress or to address specific stressors that parents may be feeling about their situation.

Jennings Applied Behavior and Cognitive Center offers group therapy for parents of children with disabilities. Our groups are facilitated by mental health professionals, trained in the field of psychotherapy, and licensed in the State of Florida. It is the goal of our group sessions to develop a haven for parents where they can communicate their feelings, find an outlet for their frustrations and celebrate their child's accomplishments with others who share a common bond.
